Fish

Fish are one of the few vertebrates (animals with a spine) found in the tide ecosystem of Haystack Rock. Most larger species of fish move out to deeper water as the tide recedes, but several species have adapted to be able to stay in the shallows. These fish have to withstand a wide range of water temperatures, oxygen levels, and camouflage to hide from land predators like birds. Look closely in the deeper tide pools and you might see a sculpin hiding in the sand or in a patch of seaweed.
