Other Names: Smooth crangon, bay shrimp, sand shrimp

Description: Smooth bay shrimp have a black and white speckled carapace that allows them to blend in with the sand. Just 6cm (2.4in) long, and fast moving, smooth bay shrimp are easy to miss, but if you look closely at the deeper tide pools around Haystack rock, you will find many burying themselves in the sand to hide from predators.

Habitat: Common in both intertidal and sub-tidal ecosystems, smooth bay shrimp range from Alaska to Baja California.

Diet: Bay shrimp feed on small clams and crustaceans.

Tide Pool Tidbits:

  • Bay shrimp are an important prey species for many tide pool animals.

  • Smooth bay shrimp spend most of their time burried under the same with just their antennae exposed.
